Everyone had a fantastic time drinking, eating and chatting. The children probably had the best time - running up and down the long corridors.
With its big, warm log burning fires and comfy sofas Peckforton Castle was perfect for creating an informal atmosphere.
The poem below is the one Brian used for his speach, making all the girls teary-eyed, although blokes probably thought it was way to mushy!
I began to search, both high and low
To find some words that people may know
But I got disheartened by ye olde English, thou, and art,
And strange dissertations about ‘one’s heart’
I want to put it simple and true
These words to get the message to you.
My wife here beside me, came back from the States,
And whilst in the House of Mytton, she found her new mates,
And she let it be known as she began her campaign,
That would continue, whether through sun, snow or rain.
A campaign to obtain the goal of her life,
A husband, seven kids, and herself as the wife.
And so with rain, a cancelled dog show if I recall,
A Bank Holiday Weekend, and an invite from Paul,
The beginning of the end for your hero I fear,
As a push through the heart came from Cupid’s Spear.
As much as I wriggled and squirmed to be free,
The feisty young gal had her hooks into me.
Now, two years later, and here I stand,
With heart full of love, empty wallet in hand.
But for all that these words are very light hearted,
I cannot imagine to ever be parted
From this delicate flower, who sits at my side
Who actually wanted to become my bride.
May I ask all those in attendance, pray raise your glass,
To such a kind and loving spirit of life,
To Claire, my new wife.
Thanks to you all for being here to share,
This special day with myself and with Claire,
To Tabby and Toby, our little aides,
And to Sarah, a great supporting role she has played,
To Doug and to Pat for your welcome into the fold,
With your eccentricities underpinned with hearts of pure gold.
To my sister, Julie, who, when it matters, is there,
And is normally found with a gelding, 4 dogs and a mare.
And last, but not least, to my mum and my dad,
For your support and your love, I cannot express how glad
I am that I can say now with pride,
That I have found Claire, your new daughter, and my bride.
